Defensive Driving 101 ... the basics.
[Posted on March 13]
DefensiveDriving.com, a pioneer in online driver safety courses, receives many inquiries daily regarding our defensive driving course and it is clear there are still are many questions related to how a defensive driving course works. So here are some basic questions and answers:
1) Does a defensive driving course dismiss a ticket?
The answer is yes, but it is dependent on the state you get the ticket in. For instance, in Texas, the defensive driving course is truly for ticket dismissal, successful completion of the course prevents the ticket from appearing on your driver record. The drivers record will reflect the completion of a drivers safety course but it will not indicate you received a ticket.
If you live in New Jersey, the successful completion of the defensive driving course does not dismiss your ticket, but it does remove the points incurred because of the ticket. A defensive driving course will removed or reduce the two points from your driver record, in effect, cancelling the affect of the ticket.
2) How long is a defensive driving course?
Again, it is dependent on the state you live in. Texas is the most stringent, but is really quite representative of the length of a defensive driving course. The law in Texas requires the defensive driving course be a minimum of 6 hours in length, five hours on instruction and one hour of break built in. There is no shorter course in Texas and most states have a six hour format and requirement. Florida, for it's Basic Driver Improvement course has a four hour minimum and New Jersey requires six hours as well.
3) Is there a speeding ticket for which a defensive driving course is not allowed?
In most states, if you exceed the speed limit by more than 25MPH, the judge will not and cannot allow you to take a defensive driving course.
4) Can I print my certificate of completion when I successfully pass my course?
In Texas, you cannot print your own certificate. In fact, the law specifically requires the delivery via third party commerical delivery source. The certificate cannot be handed to the student, it has to be mailed. Texas is the exception not the rule, as most states allow for the download and printing of the certificate of completion by the student directly.
