4 Tips to Help You Avoid Parking Lot Crime During the Holidays
December 21, 2012 | in Defensive Driving TipsWhile many people view the holidays as a time for fun and festivities, thieves view it as their payday. With more shopping going on than any other time of year, thieves thrive on parking lots to make their dough. It can be very easy to become caught up in all of the holiday excitement while you are shopping. However, it is vital that you slow down and follow these four tips to make sure that you make it home with all of your loot in tow.
- Keep Valuables Out of Sight. Whether it is your purse or purchased gifts, thieves scan car windows to look for guaranteed rewards before they will attempt a break in. If your trunk is not an option, use a spare jacket or blanket to cover up any valuables.
- Shop in Groups. If you can shop with a group of friends you will not only have more fun, but you will also be less likely to become a victim of parking lot crime.
- Be Aware. Thieves look for easy targets. In other words, if you are talking on your cell phone, while fumbling through your purse for your keys, while carrying way too many shopping bags, you are a prime target. You have no hands free for defense and you will probably not even notice a thief approaching you. Instead, always be aware when walking through parking lots. Stay off of your cell phone, keep your head up, and have your keys in hand before you ever leave the store.
- Lock Your Car. Not only do you need to lock your car when you head into the store, you also need to lock it immediately upon your arrival. Many people take a few minutes to get things situated before they will actually start driving. And if your car is like most, it will not automatically lock until you put your car into reverse. This means that there are a few minutes where you are completely vulnerable to a thief jumping into your car. Get in the habit of always locking your car as soon as you shut the door.
