Accidents happen
September 9, 2010 | in The Daily DriveI hope everyone had a safe and happy Labor day weekend. I am just returning from mine as the Bissell household had an accident. It just goes to show, accidents do happen and they happen quickly. My son knew I was going to blog about it and tried to convince me otherwise, but his accident really points out on a smaller scale, how accidents happen. My son was riding his bike on Saturday, getting ready to start the long holiday weekend with his friends. He was off experiencing Independence which is given to twelve year olds, on a bike, away from the home, the parents and the sister.
Apparently, as he was riding, he turned to see if there was a car behind him while he was riding and in between the time he had looked behind him and the time he started to turn to look forward, a curb reached out and got him, sending him down to the pavement. $1200.00’s, two pins, surgery and several missed days of school later, my son has learned the first important lesson to driving… you have to pay attention no matter what you are driving, a car, a bike, a golf cart or motorcycle, you cannot be distracted.
Fortunately, this was just a broken arm, but it illustrates how quickly things can happen and how one minute you are living normally the next you are dealing with an accident and injury.
Imagine on a larger scale, you have an employee who is responding to their bosses text and for a brief second, they take their eyes off of the road to enter the last character and they hit a pedestrian, a car or an immovable object. Now the accident is real, your company has not had any corporate driver training and there is not a comprehensive driver safety policy in place. In fact, he/she had the accident in a state where texting is illegal – the accident, is now a rather large legal concern.
Accidents happen, as a father I try to educate my kids as best as I can, knowing I did my best to help them avoid certain risks.
Do you do the same as an employer? Are you providing your employees with training which encompasses all areas of safety knowing you did the best to educate or is your company not providing training and waiting for an accident to happen.
