Are SMART cars safe ?
July 20, 2010 | in Driver Safety For You & Your FamilyI saw what I thought was a horrific accident this morning. A SMART car vs. a Suburban. No one seemed to be hurt – amazingly, as they were standing around talking and exchanging information. The SMART car was a mess and hardly recognizable other than its diminutive size, and the Suburban, well, it looks like with a new bumper and headlight, it will be as good as new.
There is no telling how this happened from just driving past, but it looked like the SMART car was hit in the side by the Suburban. I would have thought that the SMART car driver would have been in bad physical shape, but again, he seemed fine.
Is a SMART car really that safe that its passengers can walk away from a crash with a Suburban? With that thought in mind, I looked on Youtube.com for a SMART car crash test, and sure enough, despite their size, they seem to relatively safe when compared to other vehicles on the road. I doubt you can get discounts for auto insurance for their safety, however I do believe the drivers of such cars should have to take a couple driver programs to remind or refresh the owners of the hazards of any sort of distracted driving while on the road with one of those tiny cars.
