Really… it happened to me?
June 16, 2011 | in The Daily DriveSo much for only seeing those, not so welcomed interactions with a complete stranger, or an accident, I was actually in a little fender bender, in my case, a fender scratcher, on Tuesday.
It really just goes to show, accidents do happen.
It was a little after 5:30 PM, which in Houston, designates Rush Hour has already been going on for at least an hour and has at least another hour and a half to go… we know traffic here in Houston.
At any rate, I was stopped at a light, probably 15 cars back from the light, which was red. I was actually looking down at a schedule for my wife’s work when I felt a strong jolt.
What? Really? I just got hit? I looked up and sure enough, the light was still red, because I thought for an instant maybe someone had jumped the light and I was not watching the light at that instant, but no still red. I rolled down my window, trying to cool off myself, because, really?
Once the light turned green I pulled over on a side street to inspect the damage. The Buick Enclave that had so unceremoniously “bumped” me followed and we had one of those really awkward conversations which occur after an accident.
“Are you okay?” “I am so sorry, sorry.” “The same thing happened to me last week, except I was the one who go hit. My foot just slipped off the brake, I am really sorry.”
Honestly, outside of a couple of scratches, there really was not any damage done. I thought about giving her my card and telling her to take my defensive driving course, but based on her sincere apology and the fact it was a little bump, a fender scratcher not bender, I let her get off the hook, not even taking her information… I hope that does not come back to haunt me. Just goes to show, accidents happen and no matter how good a defensive driver you might be, the individual driving next to you might not be.
So remember, even if you do not get a ticket, accidents happen, if you see someone who needs it, let them know about our state approved defensive driving courses and certainly, get that discount for your auto insurance by taking yourself, because you never no when you might be in an accident!
Drive Safe and thank goodness for good bumpers!
