Always Stay Alert When Driving
October 20, 2011 | in Rules of the Road: Driving TipsDriving is a tremendous responsibility that shouldn’t be taken lightly. It’s something that we spend a lot of time and effort trying to communicate to young drivers after they’ve first gotten their license because we want them to always be as cautious and safe as possible. However, experienced drivers are often just as guilty, if not more, of being too casual behind the wheel. Even when the task of driving seems mundane or routine, it’s essential that you stay focused and alert at all times so that you’re prepared to act accordingly when things suddenly get complicated.
It’s natural that your mind will wander while you’re driving, especially during your daily commute to work, school or another destination. You may have taken that same route hundreds of times and feel as if you could drive it with your eyes closed (hopefully you never decide to test this theory). But this familiarity shouldn’t make you any less aware of your surroundings, in fact, you should be in a better position to recognize a potentially dangerous situation and be ready to react accordingly.
Unfortunately, what is more common is that drivers get too relaxed and when that happens, accidents occur. Whether you’re driving somewhere you know like the back of your hand or in an unfamiliar area for the first time, you should be constantly scanning your surroundings and keeping an eye on other drivers. By always remaining observant while driving, you’ll be keeping yourself, anyone else in your car as well as the other drivers on the road much safer.
