Don’t Dismiss Benefits Driving Course
May 29, 2011 | in Rules of the Road: Driving TipsIt’s easy to fall into the belief that we know all there is to know about something we’ve been doing for several years. This is frequently the case when it comes to drivers who have had their license for years or even decades. Many of us think that because driving is something we do every day that there’s little to no room for improvement and thus dismiss the need for or value of a defensive driving course.
The truth is, it never hurts to get a refresher on the skills you learned way back when and it’s likely if you enroll in a driver safety course that you’ll come across something that you hadn’t been taught in the past. What experienced drivers frequently comment on after participating in a defensive driving course is that they didn’t necessarily learn something new as much as they were reminded of something they hadn’t thought of in a long time. They’ll also tell you that they noticed themselves being immediately more vigilant and observant of their surroundings when in the car after taking the course, which certainly leads to safer driving.
These are some of the intangible benefits of taking a defensive driving course but there are concrete benefits as well. In some states, successful completion of a defensive driving class can lead to a ticket dismissal of a recent traffic violation. Additionally, many insurance companies offer a rate reduction to drivers who complete one of these courses.
