Do Your Part in Making Roads Safer
May 26, 2011 | in Rules of the Road: Driving TipsWhen we’re behind the wheel of our vehicle and sharing the road with other drivers, there’s a certain camaraderie that takes place and when we’re all respectful of each other, it can be quite rewarding. We all have more stories than we can remember about times when we were cut off in traffic or grew frustrated with the behavior of another driver. Getting upset does no good and can sometimes lead to accidents or other consequences.
The opposite of this frustration, however, is when one driver is courteous to another. This occurs when a driver gives you just enough of a pause in acceleration to let you make a proper lane change in front of them which results in you giving a quick “thank you” wave or nod in your rear view mirror. It’s little moments like this that are reminders that when we’re driving, we all have the same goal which is to get to our destinations quickly but also safely. Taking into consideration that shared goal is something you should do often while on the road as it’ll ensure that you exhibit defensive driving as much as possible.
It’s important to remember that this practice goes both ways, however. It’s easy to simply take advantage of the politeness of other drivers but you’ve got to partake in these little concessions as well. It’s crucial that you let someone into your lane or flash your lights to remind them theirs aren’t on. If everyone did this, we’d certainly see less accidents and fewer upset drivers as a result.
