Don’t Panic when you Encounter Road Work
May 22, 2011 | in Rules of the Road: Driving TipsNo matter where you’re driving, there’s a pretty good chance you’ll encounter road construction at some point in your journey. It’s so common that we often don’t pay it as much attention as we should. It becomes pressing, however, when a construction project requires we alter our driving route. As drivers, we’re suddenly playing a game of ‘follow the road signs’ as each one directs us through the next step of detour.
There are times, however, when that detour isn’t as clearly marked or we suddenly find ourselves slightly because we’ve been forced off our expected path. This can even be a problem in an area that you may be somewhat familiar with because you’re so used to taking the same roads. The best thing to do if you find yourself lost is not to panic. That can be easier said than done, especially if you find yourself suddenly running late.
The best course of action is to stop and ask for directions but depending on the time of day or neighborhood, that might not be an option. You’ll want to see if you can observe any recognizable road so that you’re able to get back to a familiar area. Many of us have GPS systems or smart phones that can help us in these situations but if you’re going to utilize those devices, be sure that you pull over at a safe location rather than trying to use them while driving. Finally, you’ll want to plan accordingly the next time you’re driving in the area so you can avoid getting lost again.
