Sit up Straight and Pay Attention When Driving…

Posted on by Defensive Driving Team | in Rules of the Road: Driving Tips

The most important thing to remember when practicing defensive driving is to stay alert. Being aware of your surroundings, specifically the other drivers you’re sharing the road with, is essential to avoiding dangerous incidents while driving. You need to always be ready to react to something that another driver is doing because you have to assume they’re paying less attention to you than you to them. But it’s easy to lose focus while driving, especially with the increased number of distractions that we now face which is why you need to make a concerted effort to keep your mind on the immediate task at hand.

One way of doing this is by taking note of your driving posture. You may have experienced it personally or simply witnessed another student being told by a teacher that they needed to sit up straight and pay attention. Regardless, it’s good advice to remember while driving. There are drivers who are way too reclined in their seats, slumped over or even leaning up against the window. These are positions that limit a person’s view and make them less prepared to react.

Seats in cars are adjustable for a reason and that reason isn’t to maximize your comfort level while driving. Because not all drivers are the same size or height, the seats of these vehicles needs to be able to accommodate anyone. It’s your responsibility to position your seat so that you’re able to maximize your road vision. Your driving posture is something you should always be conscious of and adjust when needed.
