Some Accidents are Unavoidable, but Stay Calm…
June 25, 2011 | in Rules of the Road: Driving TipsStaying safe when we’re behind the wheel is the ultimate goal as drivers and that’s why it’s so important that we’re always practicing defensive driving techniques whenever possible. However, as we all know, even the safest drivers are sometimes involved in accidents, often for reasons that are far beyond our control. When this happens, it’s our immediate reaction to an accident that can make a big difference in how damaging an incident it is.
Remaining calm is always important when driving but it becomes critical in the instance of an accident. Obviously that can sometimes be easier said than done but if you keep telling yourself to remain calm, you’ll put yourself in a better position to carryout the other tasks you need to following an accident. Make sure that if you’re in car has ended up in a particularly dangerous position (such as in the middle of traffic) and you have the ability to move it, you do so, preferably to the side of the road.
If you’re unable to move the car, then you’ll want to move yourself and your passengers out of the path of danger when possible to avoid the potential for any physical harm. This is only if everyone has already avoided serious injury. In a particularly bad accident, you need to be certain everyone is OK before making any movements, specifically if there’s a concern about head and neck trauma. Finally, as soon as possible, you should contact the police and your insurance company so that they can begin carrying out the necessary work on their parts.
