Vehicles Can Be Weapons
June 8, 2010 | in Driver Safety For You & Your FamilyAs some of you may know the DefensiveDriving.com online driver safety course is headquartered in Houston, TX. Near our office is US-59 South-a very busy highway. Upon return to work from my lunch break, I was on an overpass crossing US-59 South and as usual, there is a light at the foot of the overpass. The light was solid green and there was a vehicle in front of me. This vehicle completely stopped at the green light nearly causing a really bad crash. Thanks to our driver program I was able to avoid contact with the vehicle. I thought, What if I had never taken an online driver safety course?
I have surely witnessed this exact scenario before where the results were not favorable. During my tenure, I have spoken with many parents who have required their teen to take defensive driving courses in Texas simply for educational purposes. I can really say that I have a new appreciation for these parents and our online driver safety course. We all know that we cannot control vehicles around us, however, we can control ourselves and our vehicles. This is one of the great things that the DefensiveDriving.com driver programs really educates the public on.
Getting back to my story, I pulled next to the SUV to see what the driver could have possibly been doing. You probably have already guessed, but he was on his cell phone. The driver stopped at the green light because the turning lane light next to him had turned to indicate a red arrow. I am convinced that had the driver focused on driving as our online driver safety course explains, the driver would have used better perceptual skills and reacted differently.
A vehicle can be a weapon just by not paying attention. Please don’t allow your vehicle to be a weapon. For more details, sign up at www.DefensiveDriving.com.
