What does employee driver safety mean to you?
March 31, 2011 | in The Daily DriveOn Monday and Tuesday, DefensiveDriving.com attended and was an exhibitor at the Texas Safety Conference in the Woodlands, Texas. This is the second year we have attended the conference and this year it was quite clear there are a lot more organization paying attention to their employee driving behaviors, there appeared to be a lot of interest related to company driver training programs and what organizations can do to improve their at fault accident rates.
What was interesting, despite the obvious focus on distracted driving and driving while under the influence and defensive driving programs, there were two items I felt where missing as topics of conversation altogether.
First, it is clear, in talking to several people involved with safety at their organization, many companies really need to implement comprehensive driver safety programs. Simply put, there are standard operating procedures related to driver safety, but there is not a comprehensive policy.
Second, maintenance and vehicle procurement, at least from the conversations I had, are not part of the overall comprehensive driver safety policy if there is one in place. The right type of vehicle and proper maintenance of the vehicle, can make all the difference in ensuring a companies employees’ who are in the business of driving are safe.
