Adhere to Posted Speed Limits at All Times

Posted on by Defensive Driving | in Rules of the Road: Driving Tips

Paying close attention to the posted speed limits is your responsibility as a driver. But there are stretches of road where the speed limit will fluctuate and if you’re not careful, you could find yourself driving well over, which can lead to a ticket or even an accident. This is why staying focused while driving is essential. It’s very easy to become distracted now when we’re in the car due to things like stereos, cell phones and other passengers. Having your attention diverted away from the road and towards any of these things is something you need to be disciplined enough to avoid.

You should also be aware of what the standard speed limits are for the kind of road that you’re on. But it’s also important that you realize these standards are going to vary based on the state that you’re in. While the speed limit on an interstate in certain parts of the country will be 65 mph, in other states, it’s as high as 75 mph. If you’re traveling in a state for the first time, you should research these speed limits prior to your trip so that you’re prepared to follow them accordingly.

It needs to be remembered that when you’re pulled over for speeding, your guilt won’t be determined by whether or not you intended to speed but only if you were speeding. It’s on you to know the speed limit and follow it. Pleading ignorance may get you off with a warning but it certainly won’t hold up in court if you’re trying to fight an actual violation.
