Pedestrian safety

Posted on by Defensive Driving | in southernbelledriver

Walking could be the most important mode of transportation.  As the weather cools we will see more people outside enjoying the break from the sweltering heat of summer past. The willingness of drivers to give way to pedestrians is very low. 3% of all the people injured in traffic crashes are pedestrians. We, as drivers, can all take part in reducing pedestrian injuries and fatalities by giving the pedestrian the right of way.

There are several tips for drivers. Pedestrians have the right-of-way in crosswalks. If you stop in the crosswalk, you put pedestrians in danger. Those pedestrians often have to go into the traffic lanes because you have violated their right-of-way. Do not pass a vehicle from behind that has stopped at a crosswalk. A pedestrian hidden from your view may be crossing.  Be especially attentive around schools and in neighborhoods where children are active.

As a pedestrian you should always look left, right and left again when crossing, and keep looking as you cross. It is best to walk, do not run, across the street. Walk on sidewalks or paths. If there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic as far to the left as possible, this will allow drivers to see you more clearly.
