Pedestrians on the Freeway-An Oxymoron

Posted on by Defensive Driving | in Driver Safety For You & Your Family

On a major freeway in Houston, TX October 5, 2010-It is reported that an 18-wheeler created a major back-up during rush hour traffic due to pedestrians on the freeway. Pedestrians should never walk on the freeway-it is a dangerous place without a 3000 pound+ shield which we will refer to as a vehicle.

The DefensiveDriving.com, safety driving video, WheelsinMotion.com reviews how pedestrians should interact with drivers and how drivers should interact with pedestrians. Most driver-pedestrian accidents happen at night. Pedestrians should also plan their routes ensuring they follow the path of least resistance, obey traffic signs, laws, and take precautions such as wearing bright colored clothing.

Being a pedestrian means being aware of traffic signs and laws. Freeway crash statistics, and urban driving behaviors, are just a bit of what is addressed in the DefensiveDriving.com safety driving video. We all need information about our roads to be a safe pedestrian. Equipped with pertinent traffic law information, pedestrians would stick to safe areas-not the freeway.

DefensiveDriving.com courses are six hours in length as required by the Texas Department of Licensing and Registration. Our safety driving video discusses other important topics such as how to handle emergencies that may occur on the freeway. The concepts in the DefensiveDriving.com course educate on the safest decision for us as drivers, pedestrians, community and family members. We are all pedestrians at some point.
