Are Keyless Ignitions Dangerous?

 

 
It’s one of the most popular new trends in cars sold in the United States currently, but is there a chance that keyless ignition systems could be dangerous?

According to a class action lawsuit filed by lawmakers recently, the answer to that question is yes.

Keyless ignition systems allow the driver to start a car without a traditional key, as long is the electronic key fob is inside the vehicle. The main argument against these sort of systems is that, once the fob is removed from the vehicle, the engine can continue to run.

The danger here is that vehicles may be left running inside closed garages, and cause a build-up of poisonous gas carbon monoxide. According to the lawsuit, there have already been 13 deaths of this kind.

While many automakers have added extra features to help prevent this, such as a sound to alert drivers who leave the vehicle when it is still running or an “auto-off” feature, the lawsuit aims to pressure all carmakers to take similar action.
