For a lot of us, owning a car is a necessary evil. We like to have the freedom and convenience that comes with having a vehicle, but it so often brings with it a lot of extra expenses, ranging from the initial cost of the car, to insurance costs, maintenance and repair, and even traffic tickets.

So if you own a car, the chances are that you are looking for a way to cut back on the amount of money that you spend on it. To help you out, here are some ways to cut back on car costs.

Buying a Car

Buying a car is expensive whichever way you look at it, but there are ways to cut back and save yourself a lot of extra money. If you are put off by the high price of new cars, consider buying a used car that is only a few years old. If you buy directly from the previous owner, you can save a lot of money. Check the car’s Blue Book value to make sure that you get the best deal, and have the car checked out by a mechanic so that you can save on repairs later on. Also check gas mileage so that you know how much you will end up spending on filling up.

Insurance

Car insurance is a competitive business, so never take the first offer that you receive. Call around a number of local insurance companies and compare the quotes that they offer you. Remember that the cheapest is not always the best however, as it may give you insufficient coverage. Make sure you check the entire plan before choosing.

Traffic Tickets

As if you didn’t already have enough expenses to worry about, along comes a police officer to give you a fine. Traffic tickets can be avoided however, and saving money can be as simple as keeping to the speed limit when you drive on the freeway. If you do wind up with a ticket, you can sometimes get it waived by taking an online defensive driving course.

Gas

It can be so hard to save money on gas, especially when gas prices are so out of our control. However, there are a number of apps and online sites, such as gaspricewatch.com, that will help you to save money by listing prices of local gas stations and allowing you to compare them. You can also save gas money by keeping your speed low.

Repairs

Repairs are perhaps the most expensive aspect of owning a car. If you keep up to date on maintenance and necessary services, you will find that the expensive repairs are less common. Sometimes, whatever you do, you simply cannot avoid big repairs. However, if you call around and get quotes from a number of mechanics, you can save money by choosing the cheapest quote. Make sure that they are still offering you a high quality service however, otherwise you could end up with yet another repair sooner rather than later.
