Dangers of Texting While Driving | VIDEO

Posted on by Defensive Driving Team | in Defensive Driving Tips

How long does it take to ruin a life? How long does it take to end one?

When both texting and driving are involved, it could be no more than a matter of seconds. Five seconds to be exact. That is the average amount of time that it takes to check your phone while driving. Five seconds. That doesn’t sound like a lot, but at 55 miles per hour, in that five seconds you will travel the length of a football field. Think of how many things you can fit in the length of a football field — how likely do you think it is that you would miss all of them?

With the rising amount of texting-related car accidents, you probably know someone who has been involved in a texting-related car accident; you might even know someone who has died as a result. It is estimated that one in five fatal crashes involving drivers who are 15-19 years old, also involved the use of cellphones. So if you don’t yet know of someone who has been involved in a texting-related car accident, there is a good chance that you will soon.

However, you can put a stop to it by practicing safe driving and raising awareness. This video is full of people who know firsthand the devastating effect that texting while driving can have. Watch it to find out exactly what that is, and next time remember, whatever you are texting about, it can wait.
